About George Orwell

George Orwell’s book 1984 takes place in a dystopian nation called Oceania. The nation keeps tabs on all of its citizens at all times. Every action and word is watched by the government entity called “Big Brother” Even the language is being limited to restrict any political descent. 1984 follows the main character Winston Smith through his struggle against his own free will and the iron hand of Oceania’s “Thought police.” Winston is in charge of censoring all the news and making sure any information that the government does not want the public to know is either changed or incinerated never to surface. Normally a strict rule follower Winston meets a girl that makes him question his loyalty.

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

I enjoyed the concepts behind 1984. Orwell creates such a well thought out world that his name has become synonymous with “dystopian” societies. Authors refer to places that are similar to Oceania as “Orwellian”. The routines the people are made to go through. The propaganda,  living conditions , the trust issues, and the schemes that Orwell creates are so meticulously created that they might as well have been real. In fact Oceania can almost be directly compared to North Korea. Orwell seems to have created Oceania as a warning to the future of what an oppressive government could become and he was right. The story itself I found dull and hard to get through. I found Winston to be a very hard character to get behind. Not only was Winston a dull person ,but I found him to be selfish and untrustworthy. Though out the book Winston does change slightly ,but never really makes any progress as a character. Overall I found that after reading the book I could appreciate what Orwell had created. 1984 is more of a story of “what happens if we let the government get too powerful” then a story about any individual. Perhaps that is why Winston was a static character. Winston represents how an everyday person would be if they grew up and lived in a world like Oceania. I would recommend this book to someone who is not looking for an exciting read ,but a thought provoking one because even though 1984 is not a “burning the midnight oil” type of book it provokes the reader to think about the world that they live in and how far or close it is to becoming like Oceania.

  2. Mikey,
I like the honesty in your review. Im currently reading 1984 and I feel like you do the book justice but give a fair warning to anyone thinking about reading it, something I’ve heard from other people who have read the book too. Do you think if you could go back you would still choose to read this book despite it being dull or would you have tried to find something more exciting?

  3. The book sounded pretty interesting (and it still does, overall), but when you described the main character’s static-ness, the appeal honestly dropped for me. I like that you made such an honest and comprehensible review, though. I haven’t read the book, but I feel like I can understand a bit of how the book feels to read. The world is stifling, and the main character’s development has been stunted by it; that makes sense. I have to say, though, OF COURSE IT’S A GIRL. Lolololololololololol, all major life crises stem from love. 😆 I probably won’t read this, but thanks for the review. 😊

  4. I’ve heard so much about this book and I’ve been dying to read it! It’s interesting how the main character can be so uninteresting in a book so popular. I’m am super excited to pick up this book now though, so thank you!
